Happy New Year / 2015 in Review

Wow, it’s 2016 already.  Where did 2015 go in such a hurry?  It’s that cliché that as you get older, the years go by faster.  That certainly seems to be true.  It seems not that long ago that we were celebrating the start of a new millennium and here it is 16 years later.  Again, wow.

So, what has 2015 been like for me?  Let’s see…

At the beginning of the year, I made myself three unspecific goals of:  write more, read more and blog more.  And happily, I reached all three goals.

Write more

I definitely wrote more in 2015 than in any years past and that’s a sad commentary because it was only around 25,000 words (including my NaNoWriMo writing and my writing done for a small online writing course – but not including my blog posts).  It’s a step ahead for me, but in order to actually publish some books, I’ll need to do way more writing.  My efforts in NaNoWriMo got me a good start on a YA/Sci-Fi project (16,489 words written so far).  I took a break after the end of November, but am planning on getting back to it in January.

My writing goal this year would probably be at least 50,000 words, hopefully more than that if I can complete a first draft of the aforementioned project I worked on in November.

Again, I definitely read more books in 2015 than in any years past.  On Goodreads, I gave myself the reading challenge of 18 books (1.5 books per month) and I completed that goal on December 19th and then went on to read one more book on top of that.  Here is a list of the books I read this year (in order of completion):

I won’t try to review all of these, but suffice it to say, I enjoyed all of them.  I’m very picky when I choose to read a book, so I’m always pretty sure I’m going to enjoy it.  It has to have positive reviews, but it also has to have a premise that I find interesting.  If I had to pick a favorite for the year, it would have to be Dark Triumph by Robin LaFevers, book two of her His Fair Assassin trilogy – a wonderful trilogy if you enjoy historical fiction mixed with fantasy.

For the new year, I’m going to up my reading challenge to 24 books or two books per month.  I would include more books in my reading challenge, but I’m trying to be realistic here. 🙂

Blog more

It’s plain to see I’ve blogged way more in 2015 than I did last year when I started this blog.  I have NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month) to thank for that.  I probably won’t do that particular challenge this year so that I can focus my efforts more on NaNoWriMo next November.  But, it brought me a lot more views, likes and followers, so it was very much worth it.  Going forward, I would really like to try to post every other week (at the very least, once per month).

So, that’s it for this blog post.  Again, my goals for 2016 –

  • Write more – at least 50,000 words (not including blog posts)
  • Read more – at least 24 books
  • Blog more – post at least once every month

Again, Happy New Year!  I hope all of you had a great 2015 and have an even better 2016. 🙂

I didn’t end up doing any more writing last night after going to the movies, but I’ve done a little since we got home from Thanksgiving over at a family member’s house.  So, I’ll try to make that up tonight.  Anyway, again, hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  Or to those who don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, a wonderful Thursday.  See you later. 🙂

Hello again.  Today is day 23 and the letter today is T.

T is for …

Well, I didn’t get as many more words added last night as I wanted to, but I did add some.  I’m now up to 8,800 words and according to the NaNo website, I’m now on track to finish in March, instead of April.  So, at least I’m heading in the right direction. 😉  Anyway, have a nice day and see you later. 🙂

NaBloPoMo – Day 11

Hey there.  Today is day 11 and today’s letter is H.

H is for …

Heroes.  In honor of Veteran’s Day, we thank those who have served and remember those who gave their life.

That’s all for today.  I’m off to go write now.  See you later. 🙂

It was a dark and stormy night …

It was a dark and stormy night; well, not literally, but that’s where these stories usually begin…

The calendar read October 31, Halloween.  That night when bands of small ghouls, witches, and zombies roamed the streets seeking chocolates, lollipops and other sweet treats.  But, it was late now and most of them were safely at home tucked into their beds.

A woman sat alone in her home, her candy supply long exhausted, waiting in the darkness for midnight to come.  She had both dreaded and anticipated this day for the past several weeks.  She could have just gone to bed and faced this in the morning, but she was determined to meet it head on.  Her palms sweat, her mind raced.

The clock on the wall ticked ever closer, 11:35.  What if I can’t do this, she thought.  What if I start, then stop part way through, unable to continue?  What then?  11:47…  She got up and paced around the room, unable to keep still.  11:52…

This is ridiculous, she thought, you’ve got to calm down.  She walked to the kitchen and got herself a cup of soothing tea.  She glanced again at the clock, 11:58.  Okay, she steeled herself, it’s almost time.

She walked to her computer and sat down.  She pressed the power button and it whirred to life.  She opened the software to a blank screen with a single blinking cursor.  Alright, ten more seconds.  Five seconds.  Three.  Two.  One…

“Ok, let’s do this.”  She put her fingers on the keyboard and began.  It was time.  NaNoWriMo had begun…

Happy Halloween, everyone!  And happy NaNoWriMo!

A New Year, A New Start (Again…)

2015 New Year

Well, it’s that time again.  Time to reflect on the past year and look forward to the new year.  Time to make resolutions that will probably be forgotten by month’s end.  I’ve gone through this myself many times, and not just at the beginning of the year.  Last April when I started this blog, I was determined to move forward with my writing and hold myself accountable.  I posted semi-regularly, including my current goals.  When I was unable to reach those goals, I dropped them from the blog posts, and when I stopped working on the story I was writing at the time, the blog posts stopped too.  I guess I was too embarrassed to post about my writing, when I wasn’t currently doing any.  As November approached, I was looking forward to NaNoWriMo, which I had tried a couple years before and had failed dismally.  However, things got crazy at work near the end of October and just did not have the time or energy for writing.

So, although I took a rather long break from writing and blogging and didn’t even attempt NaNo, I actually did more writing in 2014 than in any other years.  I also started this blog and continued studying the craft of writing, through podcasts and other blogs.  Also last year, I did one other thing that I had not been brave enough to do before–show my writing to other people.  So, all in all, I feel 2014 was a successful one, and although it ended somewhat with a whimper, I have hope for 2015.

Now’s the time for the New Year’s Resolution right?  Well, I won’t try to quantify my goals this year, to pick a number of words to write each month, or pick a number of books to read this year.  I will simply strive to write more, read more and blog more and I’ll leave the resolutions at that.  Hope you all have a wonderful 2015, and thanks for reading!

Happy 4th of July!

Fireworks

Just wanted to wish everyone a Happy 4th of July, and to let you know I was still around.  I’ve taken a bit of a break from my writing lately and as such, didn’t have a lot to blog about lately.

I did get a couple of scenes written on the piece I was working on, then couldn’t decide the way I wanted the story to progress from there, so I had decided to think on it a while.  Then, of course, another story idea popped into my head–as always seems to happen–and I started thinking about that.  I wish I could just stay focused on one story long enough to get a first draft written.  Anyway, now that I have a lighter TV-watching schedule, I plan to get back to writing.

Again, Happy 4th of July everyone.  Go enjoy some fireworks and have a great weekend!
